A reference to two hours in a guideline discussion can be mistaken for a required observation period. A systematic review of flexible bronchoscopy guidelines tracked what documents discussed and what they supported with a recommendation.
What the review found
Strohleit and colleagues examined six general guidelines and three expert statements issued from 2010 through 2020. Two guidelines discussed two hours of recovery observation, but the review found that a recommendation was not made because of insufficient evidence. The review also found limited coverage of patients with lung disease and unresolved issues around ventilation monitoring.
What to obtain for a case review
Start with the policy in effect at the time and the record of the actual procedure, including medication and monitoring times, respiratory observations, and criteria for discharge. The paper describes the documents in its search period. Determining what applied to a later procedure requires the relevant policy and clinical context for that date.
