A laboratory finding that two compounds work together describes a result under the assay conditions. Abichabki and colleagues compared ultrapure CBD, polymyxin B and the combination against bacterial isolates. The investigators used broth dilution, checkerboard and time-kill assays.
What the combination changed
CBD alone did not show activity against the Gram-negative bacilli as a group in this study. In many of the tested isolates, low concentrations of polymyxin B allowed CBD to show antibacterial activity. The researchers also reported synergy in time-kill experiments for four polymyxin B-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates they evaluated.
The study measured growth or viable bacteria in the laboratory. To apply the result to a patient, researchers would have to determine whether the relevant concentrations can be reached at an infection site and whether the combination improves outcomes there. A claim about a commercial CBD product would also require evidence tying that product to the purified compound and concentrations used in the assay.
