What a CBD Label Can Establish in an Exposure Review

A CBD label records the seller’s stated concentration. When the amount consumed is in dispute, that number is often the starting point for an exposure estimate. Johnson and colleagues compared the claimed CBD concentration on 80 commercial products with results from liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry.

How often did the numbers align?

Using a tolerance of 10% around the stated concentration, the researchers found that 12 products contained less than 90% of the claimed amount and 25 contained more than 110%. Both directions of error matter. Depending on the product, a calculation based solely on the package could overstate or understate the CBD consumed.

The sample represented products available to consumers in Central Kentucky and provides no direct measurement of a product in another matter. A case-specific estimate would need the product or a laboratory report tied to the relevant batch, along with evidence of the amount used. The study measured CBD concentration, so its label accuracy result does not establish the THC content of those products.
