An early clinical study often measures several outcomes to see which ones might be worth testing in a larger trial. Heussler and colleagues enrolled 20 children and adolescents with Fragile X syndrome in a 12-week study of a transdermal CBD gel. Participants and investigators knew the treatment was being administered.
Which measure was the primary endpoint?
The investigators specified change on the Anxiety, Depression, and Mood Scale as the primary efficacy endpoint. They also collected other ratings that covered behavior, quality of life and overall clinical impressions. Each measure captures a different aspect of how participants were doing. The primary endpoint identifies the comparison the authors designated in advance as central to efficacy assessment.
The study tracked changes from screening in the treated group. With no placebo group, the comparison cannot separate treatment effects from expectations or other changes during follow-up. It can inform what to measure in a controlled study of that formulation.
