A protocol can explain what investigators planned to test without supplying a treatment result. A 2016 GHB and GBL withdrawal paper describes how researchers planned to study baclofen as an adjunct.
The planned comparisons
Lingford-Hughes and colleagues planned separate enrollment for scheduled outpatient detoxification and unplanned inpatient withdrawal. The protocol proposed comparing baclofen with placebo during detoxification alongside the usual benzodiazepine regimen. The planned outpatient comparison also included a short period of treatment before detoxification.
Why feasibility matters in an evidence review
The investigators intended to learn whether recruitment and assessments were practical and to characterize measures such as symptom severity, complications and escalation of care. Those data would help design a definitive trial. This publication supplies the proposed design. It gives no comparative outcome for baclofen or basis for inferring how it affected a particular patient.
