When does the clock start in a trial of total endoscopy procedure time?

Two studies can both use the phrase procedure time while starting and stopping the clock at different points. An endoscopy trial protocol defined its primary clock to include the time after the examination as well as the examination itself.

What the protocol specifies

The planned randomized comparison of remimazolam and midazolam measures its primary endpoint from the first administration of a sedative until discharge. Endoscopy time, recovery time and induction time are separate secondary outcomes. The protocol also allows flumazenil at the investigator’s discretion.

Why the time definition matters in a record review

A faster discharge could result from a difference before, during or after the endoscopy. The primary clock alone would not locate the difference. A case timeline can separately identify drug administration, scope insertion and removal, return of consciousness and discharge. The protocol states the measurement plan and supplies no comparative results.
