How can grouping cold medicines change the apparent ranking of overdose substances?

The ranking mixes a category with individual drugs

A regional hospital in Sendai analyzed 577 emergency presentations for drug or chemical overdose from 2010 through 2020. Its leading category grouped over-the-counter antipyretic analgesics and cold medicines, with 97 mentions. The next reported entries were individual agents, including flunitrazepam, etizolam and brotizolam.

The label determines what a count means

A grouped product category can include multiple formulations or ingredients. An individual drug name represents a narrower category. A rank order comparing the two depends on the researchers’ classification choices. The paper also described these as suspected drugs, which is a distinct evidentiary status from a confirmed analytical identification.

Preserve the product and the underlying evidence

When reviewing an overdose record, identify the product and active ingredients where known, the basis for suspecting each agent and any supporting test. A local ranking can describe the emergency department’s experience. It cannot identify the ingredient or the dose involved in a specific case.
