The report describes a specific exposure history
Mao and colleagues described a patient with bipolar disorder and a history of taking zolpidem above prescribed amounts. After inpatient admission and cessation, the clinical team documented symptoms that included rebound insomnia and anxiety, followed by other symptoms including reported seizure-like events and hallucinations.
Order is evidence, with limits
A timeline can show whether reported symptoms followed the last known dose and whether their character changed during observation. The patient had a psychiatric history and was being treated in hospital. A single case cannot establish that every symptom had the same cause or that another patient would follow the same pattern.
Build the chronology before comparing cases
Separate the last prescribed, last reported and last observed dose. Identify which symptoms were contemporaneously documented and which were reconstructed from later history. For seizure-like events, distinguish bedside descriptions from any confirmatory testing. Those distinctions matter when assessing what the medication timeline supports.
